I'm not looking at the cup right now, but if I recall it has a flatter
bottom than some others, which are more like a bowl. In fact I think it's
perfectly flat. If it's installed in a plane that doesn't sit perfectly
level, it will create a low spot lower than the drain. Not much of one, but
I guess enough to puddle a drop or two of water. See

So, yeah, I think it was from water not being drained, but I'm not sure it
was possible to drain it.
Another thought is that the cup may have had a defect in the anodize that
allowed the corrosion to take hold.
