Reduced throttle takeoffs are not recommended by Lycoming (Lycoming Flyer
Key Reprints page 61) and Sacramento Sky Ranch (Sky Ranch Engineering
Manual page 160). Both documents make the point that the last 1/4 inch of
throttle (fuel injection and carburetion) activates a mixture enrichment
feature that provides significant engine cooling during the critical
takeoff phase of engine operation. Therefore less than a full power takeoff
should only be obtained by reducing RPM from the rated full power RPM. With
a fixed pitch prop this reduction is automatic.
