I did the same thing to prevent wear on the cowl attach screws. In my case
the screws are "Camlocs", and the washers are flat, not tinnerman.
I bought a removable pilot counterbore, which worked well, even in a hand
drill.
I just discovered the McMaster-Carr on line catalog. They have a huge
selection of tools, with complete descriptions. No minimum order, it looks
like a great resource. They also carry gas springs.
