A lot of discussions about shocks lately. I totally agree with Mr. Spry, anything is better than the existing donuts. I would like to add/clarify a couple of items.
The TK5 dampers reduce the weight compared to the existing shocks by 1.3 lbs total and to Mr Spry's suspension by 3.3 lbs, and 6.7 lbs lighter than the dutch sets. The shocks are field adjustable via an eccentric and do not require any disassembly of
the shock to do the adjustment. They are backed by a 1 year warranty. Additionally when purchasing a set, if you are not completely satisfied for any reason, send them back and we will refund your money. For the most part, we have been able to get
shocks(standard lengths) out in less than a week or so (most of the time less than 3 days).
These shocks work like most airplane suspension systems by using oil for damping and nitrogen for the spring action. The reason is obvious: it is lighter and allows for an exponential spring load. This means you can have a softer ride at taxi and still
be able to absorb hard landings.
These shocks can be purchased from "Leading Edge Aircraft Design" or "Lancair" (they keep standard lengths (6.010-5.790) in stock). Custom lengths (7.0 - 5.5 in.) can be accommodated in addition to custom colors from Leading Edge.
The only person I know who has done flight testing on all the different variations of the shocks is Doug Weeldreyer (Lancair employee). He had a set of the Dutch (Reiger Racing BV.) on his aircraft. He now has the TK5 dampers on his aircraft and of
course currently, the factory has the Spry set on.
Doug commented that the installation and adjustment was quite easy. He also liked the ability to easily adjust the pre-load by increasing or decreasing the nitrogen pressure.
