I'm still working on the annual inspection of my Legacy, but getting
close to finishing. One of the things I wanted to check was the nose gear
anti-shimmy damper. The assembly manual says to use two steel plates with
grease between them. Set the nose wheel on top of the plates and
twist the nose wheel left and right to feel for the correct resistance.
I didn't have a couple of steel plates, but I did have a lazy susan bearing
similar to one of these:
You can probably get them at your local big box home improvement store or
hardware store. I used a 6" one because that's what I had. I
screwed a 1.5" thick piece of wood to the top side of the bearing,
about the size of the bearing's base. I set the bearing directly on the
hangar floor and lowered the nose wheel on top of the wood. A simple,
quick, and clean method of testing the anti-shimmy damper!
