Here is copy of an email I sent out in 2002 to the LML
regarding subject bulbs. I am using twin 100watt bulbs in series on each
wingtip and the results are dramatic even in bright daylight. Since 2002
many Lancair builders have used these experimentally produced bulbs. The
difference is these reflectors are made for landing light purposes and therefore
are focused correctly.
The history of these 12v MR-16 bulbs go back many years when I had a few
prototypes from a former GE Engineer and took them to
OSH. Several Lancair builders
including Rick Argente, Bob Chesley, Curt Longo and others, tried out these bulbs and liked them. After many years I
was able to get a boutique light shop
to make these bulbs. They are based on the standard MR16 (2 inch dia) format but are made from a special 100watt
halogen bulb and then joined
with a coated
reflector.
For any of those builders who are already
using this type of bulb, I encourage
you to try them out. The pencil-like beam is spectacular. I only have a small onetime supply of these as my
source for the filament is longer available. If you would like to try them
out please send a private email.
I'll send you a sample at no cost to you. If you like it, buy a dozen. If you don't, just return it. So
far, only one has returned the
sample due to mounting
considerations.
