I have a panel mounted compass in my IVP.  It is mounted right in the middle of radios, clock, wiring controlling FADEC, and wiring for many other things.  As different equipment and avionics are turned on, the compass swings as much as 45 to 90 degrees.  I ended up mounting an external pegasus to the far left face of the panel.  It is out of the way and does a great job.  The two compasses disagree by huge amounts in flight.

Bottom line is be aware that all those little electrons running through any coiled wire for avionics and other items makes a magnetic field which your panel mount compass might not like.
