Tom -
We built ours from the old manual and have the 1/8" - 1/16" gap. We laid down masking tape along the edges of the wing and fairing and laid down a bead of clear silicon. All you do is smooth it in the gap with a finger and let cure for 30 minutes before removing the tape. Works beautifully. Some guys have built the fairing out over the wing skins by about 1/8". I believe Bryan Burr did it this way. It is more work, but more aesthetically pleasing, but also looked to be a tad more work.
Tim Ong recommended that we install the bottom fairing first, then the ribs and shear web, then the top. It sure seemed easier to do it this way because we could install the ribs from the top instead of lying down under the fuselage. Doing the wing fairings was perhaps the most onerous of all tasks :-))
Check our pictures here if it would help.

Tom, leave the 1/8th inch and cover it with gap tape before first flight.
That is important for stall characteristics.

Subject: [LML] FW: Lancair ES Wing Fairings Fitting
Hello Group,
I am just starting to install the wing fairings and find the manual (mine is
1999 vintage) a little confusing. Seems like the manual directs you to end
up with a 1/8” gap between the fairing and the wing skins. I can’t find any
reference to filling this gap later. Seems to me that I’ve never seen a
plane with a 1/8” gap between the wing skin and fairing. I was thinking
that maybe the wing skin should slide into the fairing ¼ - ½ “ however that
type fit would probably abrade the paint on the wing area…????? Hope
someone can give me some guidance that’s been here already.
Any help on fitting the fairings to the wing skin would be greatly
appreciated.
Blue skies,
Tom Wallace
