I wonder if one of those heavy duty rubber cargo tiedown straps would work as well?

Columbia has a rudder/elevator/aileron lock which is a strap that ties the right rudder pedal to the pilot's joy stick. Simple, effective and easy to duplicate. Could make a photo if anyone would like one.
