Yeah, Rob, seems the bigger the engine, the more of the first quart or two
they'll regurgitate. Don't have this "problem" with my engine (Lyc O-235-L2C
that came out of a bent C-152) but my experience flying C-182's and Piper
Dakotas (essentially the same 230 HP six-banger Cont [if I remember right])
tells me that they think they're full between 1 and 2 quarts down. Still
leaves about 6 quarts plus one if they've got a filter and I've put a lot of
hours on them that way with no apparent problems.

Always hated it when the plane came out of annual full to the brim with nice
new oil - I'm sure I've contributed to the smog problem in LA by adding
those top quarts of oil to the air over the city.
