Seems to me I remember seeing more than a single report of people running
less than the recommended full crankcase volume of oil to stop it from
being ejected out the breather and onto the belly of their airplanes. The
numbers that come to mind were in engines whose operating manuals recommend
7 quarts as full oil, and folks running 5 quarts to stop the ejection of
the other 2.
While reading through this morning's AvWeb newsletter I spotted an article
about a new air/oil separator that's being produced by the folks at M-20
Turbos, Inc. (Boca Raton, FL) that sounds like a pretty interesting device.
This one mounts directly into the breather line (as opposed to on the
firewall) and is said to solve the oil ejection problem. While it's a bit
pricey at $159 it seems like a reasonable one to pay to be able to carry
(and keep on board) all the engine oil that's recommended by the
manufacturer. If you'd like to see some additional information about it,
the company has a website with a page devoted to the product, the URL is
http://www.m-20turbos.com/prod02.htm.
