The previous post about SNA is dead on.  No good reason to go there.  TOA is all GA and a decent airport.  I fly in there frequently....there is  no FBO to speak of, but they do have self serve fuel, tie downs are in good shape, etc.  It's also the home of Robinson Helicopters....where they beat the air into submissioin all day long.

Long Beach has lots of GA but I don't know about services, fees, fuel prices, etc.  airnav.com is a good resource.  

As for the marine layer, they all get hit with it.  There is a cycle to it....hot days and cool nights pretty much guarantee it unless a front has just passed.  It is easy to punch through, however, if you're so qualified as the ceilings are usually about 800' and tops are usually about 2500'.....
