I have now tried a Concorde RG12 battery for 9 months, and it works very
well. I use a Skytec starter, which draws 250A compared to 150A for the
Prestolite, so upgrading the starter caused problems with the old
battery. Starting in -5 C is now no problem, I even use to spin up the
prop before turning on ignition (the Skytec is sensitive to backfires, I
cracked one, and a friend cracked another).
The RG12 weight is 15 lbs (RG25 is 23 lbs), and cranking amps is better
than RG25xc.
Of course a 12Ah battery is not as good as a 25Ah in case of alternator
failure in IMC, but with my modest avionics it will hold up at least 2
hours, and I don't fly IMC anyway. My objective is good performance at
the lowest weight (as opposed to the more common approach: best performance).
PS Soon relocating to Santa Clara, CA, but I have to leave the Lancair
in Sweden.
