There have been several instances of a new virus being passed along to
members of the LML (myself included) and it appears that it is coming from
one of our subscribers who uses Microsoft's Outlook Express as their email
client. This is _not_ a hoax, and I would recommend that everyone get the
latest virus definitions from your virus software's website and scan your
systems to see if they're infected. If you're running Norton AV, the
latest set of virus definitions include this virus and it catches and
cleans it from your system as part of a normal virus scan.
A complete description of the W32/NewApt.worm virus is available at
http://vil.nai.com/vil/wm10475.asp which includes the list of symptoms and
the names of all the known files that contain the infected code.
Please remember, the LML itself is incapable of passing along this virus as
it comes hidden in an attachment to an email, something that the LML in its
present configuration cannot do. My personal policy has always been to
never open any email attachment if the email came from someone I didn't
know... in this instance it wasn't enough, as two copies appeared to have
come to me from folks who are LML subscribers. I would highly recommend
that you scan any attachments you might receive via email with your virus
scanning software to protect your system from possible infection.
