Given the discussion we just had about life limited
items.....
This month's issue of Cessna Pilots Association
magazine features the beginning of a series by Mike Busch entitled
"Reliability-Centered Maintenance". In it, he shows quite
convincingly that for many, if not most, items, replacement based on time in
service does not necessarily improve reliability. Instead, on-condition
maintenance is generally more effective. However, on-condition maintenance
requires an understanding of the failure patterns of the respective parts and an
inspection regime to match.
Two larger works are referenced:
Reliability-Centered Maintanance, John Moubray. 2nd
edition 1997 ISBN 0-8311-3078-4
Nowlan and Heap report
NTIS document ADA066579
The latter covers results from United Airlines
statistically showing reliability and cost.
