Adam,
In cruise, most of the lower wing surface sees a negative pressure (see
attached chart of 320/360 airfoil).  Additionally, local accelerated
flow, such as over the highly cambered outback gear doors, can generate
local low pressure regions.  It doesn't take much pressure differential
on a large surface, such as a langing gear door, to generate a lot of
force and pull them open.
