I fly approaches in my O-235L2-C powered 235 with fixed pitch prop much the
same way as Don Schaeffer, out of reflex on the 45, gear down at 120 mph,
NEVER go below 100 mph in the pattern, and over the fence at 85 mph plus 1/2
the crosswind. I put down landing flaps on the downwind abeam the numbers
so there is no retrimming in the final turns or on the final approach. It
makes it easier to get a good stabilized final approach.
Avoid putting the base leg in too close, keep the nose down in the turns and
fly the final approach like a big
airplane.
I have Franz AOA system installed but I am still experimenting with it.
I have also found that on a go-around it is better to get the gear up ahead
of the flaps. The 235 flaps are not very powerful and cause less drag than
the gear.
