Hello Everyone,

I’m thinking about getting a Lancair 235/290-D2. Would someone answer these questions?

1.    What will be the Pro’s and Con’s of getting an aircraft like this?

CONS:
You have to learn how to fly the airplane into a landing. Full stall landings in the small Lancairs result in new props. I had 1,500 hours when I purchased my Lancair 320 in 1998. I must have had really bad landing habits. It took me 700 hours to learn to grease the plane on every time. I now have 1,200 hours in the Lancair and can finally land it.

PROS:
There is no faster or more economical way to travel. I fly from Detroit to Jacksonville, Fl in 4 hours and use 30 gallons of fuel. I can't do that in the best car. The Lancair is not the plane to be boppin around locally in. If you have a cross country need, this is the plane. I have standard 43 gl tanks and can and have flown over 1,000 mile legs on many occasions.

Here is my plane:

2.    Would you give me an educated opinion about the Plane and engine combination?

I like the O-320 better but the 290 is a good 2nd choice and should cost less. It is a little smaller on the inside than the 320 or 360.

3.    Would you give me some advice, recommendation, suggestion, warning about this type of aircraft?

1.) Pay attention when landing.
2.) Buy a Garmin 396 or 496 with weather. This plane covers so much ground that there will always be some weather problem on your route.
3.) Get a good instructor.

4.    What will be the approximately annual operation cost?

I do my own maintenance except for the annual condition inspection which cost me $250 this year. I keep very detailed records. I fly the plane 120 hours per year. My annual costs are $12,000. These costs include a hanger for $175/month and insurance of $2,161 for the aircraft value of $70,000.

I have never flown a Lancair before. I fell in love when I saw the local Lancair Club, flying in formation over Big Bear Lake here California.

I can understand that. Call Lancair and see if they can recommend someone to instruct you in learning to fly the Lancair correctly.
