Bill Hogarty sent me a reference to Lancair SB 037 and it describes exactly
the situation I found with respect to draining the area of fluid. As I said
in the original post, I'm often the last to know...
In addition to drilling a "witness hole" as the SB as recommended, I cleaned
the gear leg and applied silicone on the top half inch that penetrates into
the axle mounting. I'm thinking this should keep the water out in the first
place. The new witness hole will both indicate a hydraulic leak and let any
water out that might get in...
I most sincerely Bill's sending me this reference! Craig, the entire list of
Service Bulletins for all series of Lancairs is posted on their web site at
www.lancair.com. This is "must reading" unless you want to repeat the
lessons learned in past years--some of them the hard way.
