As I said in the original post, I'm often the last to know... In addition to drilling a "witness hole" as the SB as recommended, I cleaned the gear leg and applied silicone on the top half inch that penetrates into the axle mounting. I'm thinking this should keep the water out in the first place. The new witness hole will both indicate a hydraulic leak and let any water out that might get in...
