Hello All;
I have been reading with some interest the speeds for approach and
landing.I thought I should report mine as well.Now I want you all to
know that this is repeatable test data and not a testimonial.(sorry I
could not resist trying my hand at humor also:)and can therfore be
trusted.
First off I took my airplane(a puggy little 360/long wing tips/long
motor mount/small tail)up and did a check again on my stall speed.I only
checked it in the dirty landing configuration(full flaps, gear down,
power off)it is 54 kts(62mph)I use the same technique Dan Schaefer uses
by taking the flaps out of reflex at about 160 KIAS.Then it is MP 12/13"
trim until 120kt.Gear down on down wind.I then slow to 100 kt turn base,
flaps as needed.I fly final about 85kts.As I cross the threthold I like
to be about 70kts.I hold off, wings level, nose level ,power off or
maybe just a squirt until the mains touch.I then immediatly retract the
flaps.( I know you flight instructors out there are going on point about
the the flap retract on landing)This seems to keep things on the ground
better.My home base airport is 2500 ft trees at both ends and with the
exception of very strong gusty winds this works everytime.Crosswinds, I
use less flaps and the same speeds.I fly at 1700/1900 lbs
regularly.Always the same speeds.I also agree with Dave Morrs.It seems
that there are lots of variations on this and what works for me maynot
be right for your particular airplane.However these numbers are a pretty
good representaion of speeds from what I have seen.These are called
experimental and you should do same with your speeds.
