Hot Dog!!! We're finally back to things related to Lancairs! I'm talking
about the recent brouhaha concerning the snake oil salesman taking up too
much of the bandwidth that should be dedicated to Lancair stuff!
I'm flying one of the early Lancairs (Hull no. 52) with a slightly
"improved" Lyc. O-235-L2C engines (Hi compression pistons). I took my
initial instruction from Mike DeHate back in Nov. '94 and have used the
landing speeds he recommended ever since.
For the record, I always reflex at or above 160 MPH IAS; I go out of reflex
on the 45 entry at about the same speed, which helps slow me as I get into
the pattern. This always requires a major re-trim to bring the nose back
up - which probably causes the immediate speed decrease. The gear goes down
at about 120 MPH and I NEVER go below 100 MPH IAS in the pattern until
established on about a 1 mile final. At that transition, I begin
decelerating so I get to the threshold no slower than 85 - 90 MPH IAS. I
make sure that all turns are behind me before I get slower than 100. At this
time, I can feel that the airplane wants to drop it's nose so I crank in a
lot of nose-up trim to relieve stick pressure. Final approach is never below
85-90 right down to touchdown. As I round out, I apply a touch of power to
aid in the flare and to avoid the "carrier arrival" syndrome.
I'm sure each Lancair will handle a bit differently but this is my landing
technique which has served me well for over 500 hours in N235SP.
