This is exactly the situation with a ballistic recovery parachute - aka
the Cirrus panacea:
Stall/spin - pull the 'chute.
VFR flight into IMC - pull the 'chute.
Fuel exhausted - pull the 'chute.
Icing - pull the 'chute.
Rough engine - pull the 'chute?
Sure, the blossoming silk might save a pilot in the unlikely event of
the engine falling off or the wing spar breaking, but I would rather
commit time and money and payload on training and instrumentation than
on a parachute of either type. And as Dennis Miller would say, "That's
just my opinion - I could be wrong".
