You don't tell us how far LOP 1590dF put him, but I'm guessing that he simply was so far LOP that as soon as the rain messed up the F:A ratios, he had a cylinder or two not fire on one stroke. The result was a light off of the fuel in the hot exhaust. (it wasn't a backfire, it was an afterfire.)
