I recommend getting the surface as flat as possible with micro first before applying the primer. Set up a flood light at grazing incidence to the surface and turn off the overhead shop lights. This makes the surface imperfections easier to see. Once the surface is flat, apply the primer with a foam roller made for applying varnish (I got mine at Home Depot).
