Darus' explanation to me on the speed issue was a long time ago, but the
basic idea was that you could reduce the frontal area due to more efficient
cooling. This gains speed. In addition, the engine's specific fuel
consumption decreases. So if targeting a fuel burn, more horsepower would
be generated for the same gallons per hour, resulting is higher cruise
speeds.
