I've been reading several comments about LPE engines, and I want to
say That I now have an ongoing working relationship with Mr. Zehrbach.
I had prop strike in my Glasair 1 RG and decided that since I had the
engine torn down that I would send all the parts of the I-O360 Lyc. to
LPE to have his entire coating system applied to my engine. (ceramic,
for heat control & an anti-friction coating to valve stems, bearings
etc.)
Boy, am I pleased! At this writing I have only five hrs. on the engine.
The engine seems to have stopped using oil (half a quart total so far).
I have no oil coming from the breather or streaks on the belly.
Here are some of the numbers: Oil temp. now is 180 F degrees,
compared to 190-195; Cyl. temp 380F below 5,000',(normalized turbo
off), 395 - 400(Hottest cyl) at 15,500' (turbo on). However the most
noticeable parameter is fuel flow! I am now using only 10.2 gal./hr.
verses 12 gal/hr. I always use 25" map and 2500 rpm at all altitudes
up to 20T.
The speed is about the same as before overhaul, 193K tas at 3.5T
and 217k tas at 15,500'. Every flight the cyl. heads are a little
cooler.
The speed could be improved if some of the cooling drag were eliminated.
I feel confident that these coatings could significantly improve the
reliability of the Con 550 , or any engine for that matter.
I had been planning to use the LPE 650 V-8 in my Lancair, but now I am
absolutely convinced that this is what I want, and Zehrbach is the guy
that can make it happen.
