My faithful old Skylane always broke the squelch when near TV and FM towers and the closer I got to the towers the more garbled the received signal became. The problem was on both the KX175B and the KX155. I rescreened all leads that had screens, played with the grounding of the intercom and radios, nothing helped. On a trip to PDX I almost lost communications entirely, so in desperation I started asking around. One bright spark said "It's your ELT! It picks up radiated signals distorts them (intermodualtion distortion) and reradiates enough energy across the aviation VHF band to screw you up entirely!" "Balderdash!" thought I but I was desperate. I disconnected the ELT from it's antenna and took the plane to a convenient FM tower (couldn't fly it without an ELT, so I drove it), dead quiet. I thought the radio had died, but all was working perfectly. Apparently this is a well know problem with old SHARC ELTs. New ELT all is now well. Hope this helps others if not Don.
