Kyrilian,

We have used two sets of strikers on several Legacies. Works great.

We also add UNI carbon to the forward area for increased stiffness before we bond on the top skin. Lancair has now adopted a similar program (but not with UNI) for adding strength in this area. Give their tech support another try as they may have been at Oshkosh. Ask them about how they make this area stronger. If you cannot get this info, someone else on this list who has recently participated in a Builder Workshop at Lancair can chime in.

Cutting the canopy is the best way to fit it. Yes, this is typical.

A split at the aft end in the center can be a big help. Remove enough material to get the canopy to lie down flat. We often split the stiffener, as well, in order to get a good fit. Depending on your fit (which does vary from Legacy to Legacy), you may need to split the top skin on the sides.

See attached photo's for an example where we split the front center and the sides. This gave us three pieces to trim and fit together. This, too, worked very well (and allowed the big "bow" at the top, aft end to lay flat). As I said, each airplane is a bit different so you'll have to decide where it's best to cut, but, in any case, you will very likely need to cut.

I hope this helps.

Happy building,

Ron

Subject: [LML] Legacy Canopy Fitting

Legacy builders and former builders,

I'm working on my canopy, and understand that there have been problems with the front flexing upward due to strut force.  Has anyone tried installing a second pair of canopy alignment plates and striker plates near the front to keep the canopy from bowing outward at the front?  Is this overkill or necessary or would it cause a problem that I'm not considering?  I haven't yet installed the plexiglass or struts.  What additional stiffening have people done to the stiffener?

Also, it appears my canopy skin doesn't fit perfectly, especially at the rear.  What's the current method of fitting the skin?  Splitting it into three or four pieces is mentioned on Don Barnes' site (www.lancairlegacy.com).  Is this typical?

Oh, and one other thing... since when has phone tech support no longer been provided by Lancair??

 Thanks,
- Kyrilian
