Steve Colwell:

In response to your question about placement of various items in a Legacy RG.  In my airplane, with an IO-550, Hartzell 3-blade, all-electric, dual Chelton screen set-up, we put both batteries and the power grids behind the right seatback.  We put the hydraulic pump and the ELT behind the left seatback.  The only thing aft of the bulkhead is the Crossbow 500 AHRS.  We put access panels in the seatbacks for ease of maintenance.  The CG gets toward the front of the envelope with no fuel, no baggage, no passenger and a 170 lb. pilot.  The CG gets near the rear of the envelope with a 200 lb. passenger, a 200 lb. pilot and 100 lbs. of baggage, although I don't fly in that configuration.  This is true even after I switched from the small starter to a full-sized one.  The engine starts fine.

I like the way the airplane worked out.  When landing solo with no baggage and half fuel, there is not enough trim to completely stabilize the descent on short final, but plenty of elevator authority to flare.

Subject: [LML] Legacy Balance/Space Question

I am planning the locations of two 20 amp Panasonic batteries (14.6 lbs each) and the 3, Power Distribution Grids (14 volt dual battery/dual alternator/cross-tie).   This is a Legacy RG with a Cont. 550, Hartzell 3 blade and Dual Screen Chelton.

My understanding is the Starter/Avionics PD Grid is usually located on the forward side of the firewall along with one of the Batteries…  Any suggestions?

Another PD Grid could be located either on the aft side of the firewall or on the Avionics Shelf.  I hear things get very crowded behind the panel.

Some of the Legacies in the factory workshop are putting one or two Battery/PD Grids  behind the seat back and locating the Hyd. Pump just behind the right seat back.  Pros & Cons?

I have heard some 550 Legacies are having starting problems and aft CG concerns.  Those of you who are flying could be very helpful to those of us who are still in decision mode.
