Hi Gang,
This talk of ANR headsets got to wonder just how good Bose ($995) is
Vs. the Lightspeed 30 3G's ($595) which I use.
I went down to the Tropic Aero Pilot Shop next to the Fort Lauderdale
Executive Airport and discussed this with owner Jerry Carbone.
http://www.tropicaero.com
Jerry has this $20,000.00 "egg" that you can sit in and try all of the
headsets available today - something you can't do at Sun 'n Fun.
Jerry went on to tell me that he didn't like the Bose because he has a,
err, "fat" head and after a while they hurt. With the Lightspeed they
were O.K. for a bit longer period, but the higher (thicker) headband
touched the headliner of his twin Baron - so he doesn't like those
either.
Then we got onto the discussion of which brand does the best
cancellation, regardless of how they fit his head. Does the Bose do a
better job than the Lightspeed? It seems that there are no industry
standards so the manufactures throw the "db" range around a lot and
Jerry says it doesn't mean anything. It all has to do with ones own
personal hearing preferences.
He invested in that expensive "egg" so one could try out all of the
headsets and get the one that was best for that persons hearing. Jerry
says hearing varies more than you think. It is very common, Jerry says,
for a customer coming in wanting a David Clark and leaving with a
Lightspeed or the other way around.
So just because I like Lightspeed, that may not be the reason for you
to buy one. If y'all are coming down to Sun 'n Fun, fly a bit further
southeast to KFEX and give Jerry a call if you need a no nonsense
education- you will be glad you did - personally, I learned a lot.

I don't work for Tropic Aero or anything like that, but Jerry said he
will be glad to help you anyway he can.
Warm regards,
Gary
