Again, just because you have an IFR GPS in your panel does not make it legal for IFR flight. You must comply with AC20-138A, then your IFR certifiable GPS is certified. Now, as far as whether to file /G, or /A, or whatever. In the ATC system, we as controllers don't care in the least if you are /G or /A, except if you are going to be flying on a direct route. There is nothing wrong with asking for, and receiving a clearance to go direct somewhere even if you don't have an IFR certified GPS. If you ask for direct and the controller sees you filed /G, then he will clear you direct. If you are filed /A he either will not give you direct, ask you if you can navigate on your own, ask you if you need a radar vector, or just give you a radar vector anyway. If he asks you if you can navigate direct on your own, he will change your suffix to /G anyway to alert the next controller that you are flying that direct route on your own. Since you cannot go direct unless you are in radar contact at all times, you are receiving radar monitoring (of your route). It doesn't matter if you are using a hand held GPS, or a GNS480. I'm talking about flying under IFR of course here, but the same rules apply for VFR flight following. If you are flying direct, and haven't told the controller you are /G, he will make your flight plan that passes internally in the ATC system reflect /G. Totally different flight plan than the VFR flight plan that you filed with the FSS.
