Continental give sequential "dash numbers" to their engines as new versions are developed.  Unlike Lycoming where each letter means something, not so with Continental.  They are just sequential.  Where are the missing letters?  Who knows.  I think the IO-550G was the first of the IO-550s with tuned induction.  It was developed for the Mooney Ovation.
