My painter has taken a small brush like you'd use for pinstriping and painted a thin line of clear coat along the seam.  Another trick is to keep the edge from being too thick.  If you have a thickness of primer up against the tape, then color, then clear, it can get pretty thick and is more susceptible to chipping.
