Perhaps heat is being conducted from inside the engine >> Sounds plausible, I've always put them under the wing, outboard of the prop-wash and out of the sun. Another cause of errors is the use of a non-standard splice or connector in the thermocouple wire that the system is not calibrated for. The connection could act as a second thermocouple, in series with the temp probe, and could affect the reading. I would suspect that your location is the culprit however.
