If you file a flight plan via DUATS, you must use the type A/C that is adapted in the FAA data base, or the flight plan will be rejected. So if you file as a LC2, it will be rejected, and you must use LNC2. The airplanes performance characteristics are also entered into the FAA data base, so the computers can keep up with the mode C. For example, if you enter a type AC as a C172, but the AC is actually an F16, when the AC is climbing or descending at 8000FPM, the mode C readout on the radar scope will read XXX, and the computer can't keep up. If the computer knows it's an F16, then it will anticipate the high climb rate, and usually keep the mode C readout. The Center, or Tower computers will accept just about anything as a type AC, so the only problem you will have is if you file via DUATS.
