I went to seminar given by FAA and Jon Jordan federal air surgeon in Kansas
City in May 05. The presenting ophthalmologist stated that blended contacts
and multifocal contacts were ok. When pressed on the term "bifocal" there was
debate and he would not commit. My understanding is that contacts similiar to
blended glasses that correct for near, intermediate, and distant vision are
ok. Their true concern lies with monovision and loss of depth perception. I
feel comfortable issuing the medical and have the applicant check yes to 17 on
the 8500 form and have had no problem with blended multifocal contacts. I have
had OKC have problems with bifocal lenses in the past.
