”Even the Collins and
Honeywells of the world, who have done this for decades and have in-house
experts that have more knowledge and experience than the entire experimental
community combined, do not always get it right the first time. “
Some years ago I bought a used Collins VHF251
Com. I was new to aviation at the time but being a Texas resident I knew Collins as a major
Aerospace Company. After the third trip to the Avionics Shop to
solve the same problem I was appalled to learn that this simple com radio had
over 20 Mods. A couple of the mods that “should have fixed it”
had already cost over half what I paid for the radio.
Collins had over 20 attempts to get it
right at their customer’s expense. I finally accepted a marginal
radio because I was unwilling to bet again with those odds. You can’t
be too careful before you lay your money down.
