This is true, depending on the clay you get.  I found some that doesn't
have any grease at all in it, AAMOF, it is strictly water based and, if
left out of its container for 24 hours, hardens into a plaster-like
substance.  If you can't find the non-greasy clay just cover the spar and
inner wing skin with packaging tape or Saran wrap before doing the test.
Even if you use the oily clay and don't cover anything, your required
thorough cleaning proces using MC should remove all traces anyway.  On
a layup as critical as this one it would probably be wise to do multiple
MC cleanings anyway, just to be sure.
