Here's what I submitted to the insurance company
recently.
Pilot in command:
Single-engine/ fixed wing/ fixed tricycle gear
732: 00
Single-engine/fixed wing/tailwheel 463: 00
Single-engine/fixed wing/retractable gear
8400: 00
Multiengine 820: 00
10415:00
Total time-- LNC4 (Lancair IV) 4000 hours
Total time as required crew member (USAF-PAA) --
21,000 hours
I've never been in an accident. There have been
several incidents--but none resulted in injury.
Approximately 130 Lancairs have been test flown.
Several returned to airport with mechanical problems.
The most serious perhaps was a preignition/detonation
event that ran OK on the return to the airport but on
examination we found a melted down cylinder.
On my own aircraft, (IV-P) I had a magneto impulse
coupling failure because of a kickback on engine
start. That resulted in parts falling into the valve
gear reduction on the next flight which then
necessitated a on airport dead-stick landing. It was
followed by a severe nose wheel shimmy that collapsed
the nose gear.
What do I attribute this good fortune to? Good
preflights help. Clean fuel systems. Good run-up's.
Good maintenance. But to really give credit where
credit is due--

if I settle on the far side of the sea,

your right hand will hold me fast.
do you know of anyone with more than 2,000hrs in
single engine part 91 GA without an off field landing?
