James/Scott -
The 320 was originally designed on the basis of  8' 6" stub wing
width, so that it would be "trailerable" on the highway. This is what
resulted in short, stubby main gear which were difficult to cram into the
stub wings and resulted in the aircraft's slightly nose high attitude.
Lance "threw that out the window" for the Legacy and made the
stub wing width 10' which then gave sufficient room for the longer main gear
strut, which provides REAL shock absorbing and solves the excessive
nose-high attitude at the same time. Now, in order to keep the wing tanks at
the same size, he had to lengthen the wings by approximately one foot each,
hence the additional overall wing width. Although the claim is to improve
performance, that is the real reason the wings are longer. It is true that
high altitude performance is increased, that's above 16,000 ft.
