I guess it's finally time. Time that is to declare that I'm one of the next
Legacy builders...
On Sept 12, I take delivery of a Lancair Legacy FG in Carbon Fiber (I think
I got the last one that was in stock after spring SNF).
Plan is to start with 4 wks at the factory in the Builders workshop on that
date. That should get me on the gear, with the bulk of the flying surfaces
done, plus a bunch of other odds and ends.
While, I've been lurking, I've been doing a bunch of homework and have most
everything worked out.
AirFrame: Legacy FG in Carbon
Engine: Performance Engines Stage 3 IO-550 with 370HP, dual electronic
ignition (normally aspirated)
Electronics: 24v dual alt/batt (multiple busses :) )
Avionics: Most likely a Chelton Sport (I took advantage of the deal at
Oshkosh), TruTrak AP, SL-30, 3 steam gauges - AS, AI(orADI), ALT
Panel: I'm gonna do my own seeing as I've done it once in a certified
airplane :)
Mods: speedmods from legacy innovations, LED NAV/Strobe from gs-air, SS
brake lines from the guy on Don's site, using some very cool little trim
relay boxes from www.f1-rocketboy.com (these things are just too cool with
relay logic for dual controls, priority, with manual lockout and indication,
trim speed control for pattern vs. cruise, and run-away trim control (now if
they would just do the 24v-12v conversion :) )
Plan is to take a year off and build this.... With an outside chance of
getting to SNF in it next year (course it won't be painted, and I may be
setting on a big foam block :) It's a long shot, but it just might happen.
For those about to start, don't underestimate lead-times... Engines are at
least 16wks, avionics are anywhere from 8-12wks, and options even from
lancair have lead-times that you'll have to anticipate. I've ordered mine,
actually did it a few weeks ago, and hope to pickup everything, but the
prop/spinner when I leave the factory in mid Oct.
But, enough of this... I just had to claim fame, now I'll go back and learn
from all the "masters"!
Thanks to all who have coached, convinced (Don), and otherwise provide
poked, prodded or provided insight and information.
The journey begins.....
Alan
