Why would industry produce and pilots buy these boxes it the FAA shrinks its services? TIS is great but not very useful if the coverage is so spotty that you can seldom depend on it. These are the people who are going to give us free flight?

While TIS is a nice feature and will become more important as traffic increases (VLJ air taxis, etc.) we need to remember that mid-air collisions make up a minute fraction of all accidents. Keep in mind that we are fighting a war (not going to get into the merits of that here) funds need to be cut from somewhere....yes, it's frustrating for those of us who have TIS, but in the scheme of things it's just an unfortunate set back. It's the risk you take when you invest in an emergent technology....

I did get the feeling speaking with the technical folks at FAA ACY, that they are enthusiastic about TIS, and want to see the system preserved or expanded. Their hands are tied by funding issues beyond their control. Hopefully if this issue gets some attention in the press, we can convince the FAA to release funding to preserve and hopefully expand the TIS coverage.

So all is not lost. IMO, however, attention in the main stream press is the LAST thing we need...hopefully they are going to be selective (i.e. AOPA, NBAA, etc.) about where they try to beat this drum....
