I talked with Charlie Becker and Fred Statler from EAA
about procedures for getting into Oshkosh for High
Performance Aircraft.
The Warbird/High Performance A/C route is restricted
to Turbojet and Twin Turboprop aircraft and Warbirds.
Keep in mind that a Navion and others like it are
Warbirds and will use this route as long as they fly
130 KTS or better. If you use this route as I
understand some do, it is highly unlikely that tower
or anyone else will turn you away. However, it there
is an incident then it would be reviewed as to why you
used this route.
In years past controlers at Fisk sorted aircraft by
where they thought they would be parking which reduced
your taxi time and taxi way congestion. Now aircraft
are supposed to be sorted by speed. Aircraft at 135
kts and 2300' will go to a different runway than
aircraft flying at 90 kts and 1800'.
One note of caution is that if low performance
aircraft are being sent to runway 18-36 which is the
preferred runway for aircraft flying the Warbird route
you will be mixing for landing with a J-3 or like
slower aircraft. You will still find low and slow
aircraft on that route.
The worst times to arrive are between 12:00 and 3:00
because 18-36 is closed for demonstration fly-by
activity. Also the first hour after the airshow is
very busy.
Fred said that you are the pilot in command and should
do nothing that would jeopardize yourself or others.
If you are requested to do something by a controller
that will not safely work for you, tell them you
cannot comply, then make a request that can work.
In any event be prepared and current for slow flight
because on final you will be mixing with slower
aircraft.
