Often, the heat soaked engine mounted fuel pump will vaporize fuel and cavitation will ensue - thus denying fuel to overcome the vaporization in the spider and injector lines.
 
Good luck with a Lyc, but Continental I/O engines are equipped with a return line at the throttle body, so.... a highly effective procedure is to keep the mixture at idle cutoff, throttle closed and run the boost pump for SEVERAL minutes to use the cool circulating fuel to rid the main lines and engine pump of heat. Then proceed as though you can get fuel to the engine.
