Pat,
Sorry to hear you had to go through a bypass, but
it's good to hear you're doing well. I had the same thing a little over
three years ago. Getting the medical back isn't hard if you've been
exercising, walking is really good, so you can get your heart rate up during a
treadmill stress test. Mostly it's just paperwork. AOPA has an
excellent step by step description of what you need to do on their
website. If memory serves you have to wait until 6 months after the
procedure before applying for a special issuance. Once the FAA has the
paperwork it will take 2 to 3 months for it to flow through their
papermill. It's really important to cross all the t's and dot all the i's
or the FAA will kick it back or ask for additional information, which will just
take longer. For a 3rd class medical the special issuance is good for one
year so each year you need to do the stress test and submit it about 3 months
before your medical expires.

Just finished a heart double bypass and recovery seems to be
going smoothly. Any experiences out there in getting the medical
back? Pat Halloween (pathabu@aol.com)
