Jim, et al,

When I built my 320 I had hear several horror stories about the backing plate shedding rivets, etc.  When I got the spinner and found that there is no attachment other than the backing plate I decided to make an attach point up front.  The result is a foam/glass “donut” in the front of the spinner that slides snugly over the hub of the prop (did a packaging tape release of the micro).  You can see the results at http://w1.lancaironline.net/pix/olsen-construction.  I have about 160 hours on my 320 now and have had no issue at all with the spinner and cracking.  In fact, I had an in-hangar maintenance mishap about 1 ½ years ago where the nose gear retracted and the plane landed on the spinner.  The only damage was a little crackling of the paint and gel coat on the spinner – the donut saved the whole spinner and backing plate.
