In the 2003 airventure cup race, one of the racers
( a white lightning ) had a linkage failure and couldn't close his nose gear
door.
This cost him a bunch of top speed
compared to other planes and his own performance on previous years.
Between 5 and 10 kts from memory.
In the class of 360 engine, retractable planes,
this put him behind the field.
