Pat, and others,
In regard to primers, here's what we've done to prep several
Lancairs at the suggestion of the person who was going to paint
them:
Sand bare surfaces and wipe with solvent
Apply PPG K38 high build primer surfacer with a 4" paint
roller
Sand with 80 grit dry, using a board
Repeat as necessary to desired smoothness (any really bad
areas will show up and can
levelled with micro)
Repeat until satisfied with quality of surfaces
Apply PPG K36 primer, reduced, with a spray gun
At this point we flew the planes and later took them to the
painter who did whatever it is they do. I can't compare this to other
products but I find it hard to believe any other method would be
significantly better. I'm sure there are as many opinions as there are
builders out there, but this has worked well for us. On this same subject,
I recently discovered the best sanding board I've ever used. It's urethane
foam with a stainless steel face for the paper to stick to. The unique
feature is that it has 3 removable steel rods that can be inserted or removed to
change the flexibility, stiff for wing surfaces and softer for the curvier parts
of the fuselage, for example. I got mine from the Eastwood Company
(eastwood.com or 800-345-1178). Get one of their free catalogs. They
have a lot of neat stuff we can use. They also have rolls of sticky back
sandpaper for use on sanding boards at a decent price. Now, if I could
just find someone who likes to sand...........
