Yes, wouldn't a compressor stall result in less air--same fuel... overly
rich mixture, resulting in the pop in the exhaust? That's my point.

I would suspect a compressor stall rather than the turbine. Most of my exciting bangs in pure jets have been from the compressor stalling.
